Networks and Allies
Since 1982, our mission statement has mandated that we support those working to build a just and better world. We take that mission seriously, and often work in close partnership with nonprofits and other investors, including foundations, public pension funds, religious institutions, and other socially responsible investment firms. Two particularly powerful coalitions we work with include the environmental group Ceres and the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility.
Ceres
More than 15 years ago, we helped originate and incubated the Ceres, a unique coalition that brings together environmentally concerned shareholders, corporations, and environmental advocacy groups. Ceres developed a set of principles that commit companies to improve their environmental practices and publicly report their progress.
In partnership with the United Nations Environment Program, Ceres developed the Global Reporting Initiative, a global set of guidelines for companies reporting on their social and environmental performance. Currently, Ceres is helping convene some of the largest public pension funds in the U.S. to raise their voices with companies and policymakers on the need to address the economic, social, and environmental risks posed by global warming.
Trillium Asset Management Corporation (”Trillium”) remains an active member of the Ceres coalition, and is engaged in ongoing environmental dialogues with some of the largest companies that have endorsed the Ceres principles. Our President, Joan Bavaria, was instrumental in founding Ceres, chaired the Ceres board for most of its history, and still actively serves on its board and Executive Committee.
Social Investment Forum
In 1981, working with friends and colleagues, Joan Bavaria worked to co-found the Social Investment Forum (SIF). The Social Investment Forum is a national nonprofit membership organization promoting the concept, practice and growth of socially responsible investing and has over 500 institutions and financial professionals as members.
Trillium supports many SIF initiatives and serves on the steering committee of SIF’s Shareholder Action Network (recently renamed the Advocacy and Public Policy Program).
Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility
Trillium Asset Management is an active associate member of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR). ICCR’s membership includes over 275 faith-based institutional investors, including national denominations, religious communities, pension funds, endowments, and hospital corporations with an estimated $110 billion in combined investments.
Each year ICCR coordinates over 100 shareholder resolutions on major social and environmental issues sponsored by its members. Trillium Asset Management joins in many of ICCR’s campaigns and co-files a number of ICCR’s resolutions.
Philanthropy
Trillium Asset Management has a policy to donate 5% of our pre-tax profits to charitable organizations chosen by a committee of employees. We also allow employees to spend up to 2 hours of work time per week volunteering for community groups and other non-profits. Our Sustainability Reports under the About Us section of the website detail all the groups we supported with donations over the past several years.
