Environmental Advocacy
A Multi-Pronged Effort
Trillium Asset Management Corporation (“Trillium”)’s environmental advocacy and screening are informed by the recognition that sustainability ultimately depends on three conditions — ecological health, social justice, and healthy commerce. Our very name, taken from the three-petaled trillium flower, was chosen to symbolize our mission to promote these goals.
How We Screen
Trillium typically avoids investing in companies that are egregious polluters, by absolute standards and in comparison to others in their industry. We avoid companies involved in nuclear power. We seek profitable investments in sectors that seek to provide solutions to environmental problems, such as renewable energy, organic agriculture, and alternative transportation.
In general, we apply a “best of sector” approach to environmental issues — that is, we seek to invest in companies that are leaders within their industries in terms of the minimizing negative environmental impact of their activity. Where we hold stock in companies with mixed environmental records, we use dialogue and shareholder resolutions to press for further positive changes in policy and practice.
