Volunteerism
Living Our Values
Our people really do make a difference. We donate 2 hours per week of work time for employees to volunteer for non-profit groups. The company also matches employee fundraising for an approved non-profit, dollar-for-dollar, up to $300, and makes after-tax payroll deductions available for Community Works. In addition, the company donates 5% of before-tax income to charities chosen by employees. Read about some of our employees’ volunteer efforts and the organizations which benefit…

I serve as an advisory board member for The Carrot Project, a small non-profit organization that creates small farm financing solutions in the Northeast. The Carrot Project addresses financing gaps for small- and mid-sized ecologically-friendly and financially viable farm enterprises by making loans and guarantees available and by exploring equity solutions. In addition to my personal interest in sustainable food systems, many Trillium Asset Management Corporation clients have expressed an interest in investing in organic and sustainable agriculture. The Carrot Project is working to develop the financing vehicles that could make such direct investment possible.

I volunteer for Hopalong & Second Chance Animal Rescue, with offices in Oakland and Novato, California. Its mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of cats & dogs through rescue, spay/neuter & education programs. Each year thousands of animals are abandoned throughout Northern California & must be euthanized due to lack of shelter space from pet overpopulation. With a very small but incredibly hardworking staff & an army of volunteers, they do everything from soup to nuts, from the shelter rescues & picking up abandoned animals on the street, to finding & coordinating care with foster parents, to screening & follow-up with their adoptive parents, to organizing mobile adoptions, fundraising events & education programs in the community, to maintaining a pet survivor program. These animals provide such wonderful companionship, giggles & love to us, & they can’t speak for themselves when they need help. I’ve got two fabulous rescue cats at home, & this wonderful rescue group gives me a chance to help find good homes for all the cats & dogs I can’t adopt myself!

I volunteer for Boston Pride. Working with the gay community all year to pull together a day to be out and counted is important to me. It helps me give back while being proud of who I am.
Their website is http://www.bostonpride.org/. Here is a brief description:
“For over 32 years Boston Pride has served as a means for showcasing the diversity and visibility of Boston’s Gay Community. Boston Gay Pride has given our Community an opportunity to comment on important issues with regards to social and political concerns of the times.”

I volunteer as a Parent Supporter for Welcome Baby.
Welcome Baby provides parenting education and support to families with young children. Their services are available for free to all Durham County, NC residents with newborns and children to age 5. Welcome Baby strives to answer the many child development and infant care questions parents have during their children’s first years. They distribute developmental guides, offer telephone support to parents of newborns, have a discussion group for parents of newborns, maintain a lending library of books and videos, and their staff is available to discuss individual parenting concerns.
Parent Supporters make weekly calls to families who have requested this peer support. They provide a listening ear and information on local resources to families.

I am a Trustee of the Hyams Foundation. I serve on both the Investment/Finance Committee and also the Ad Hoc Committee on Mission Related Investing.
The mission of the Hyams Foundation is “to increase economic and social justice and power within low-income communities in Boston and Chelsea, Massachusetts.” The Foundation’s current grantmaking guidelines build on its past experience and expertise while bringing greater focus to its funding strategies. The guidelines also draw together the Foundation’s work in a more comprehensive way by focusing on the following four community priorities or outcomes:
- increased civic engagement, with a special focus on immigrant communities;
- more affordable housing, especially for very low-income families;
- increased family economic self-sufficiency; and
- enhanced opportunities for low-income teens.
The Foundation also will continue to promote organizational diversity throughout all of its grantmaking areas. The Foundation believes that well-functioning organizations that also have diverse boards and staff are more effective in serving and empowering Boston and Chelsea’s diverse communities. It also believes that identifying issues of racial/ethnic discrimination and disadvantage, and drawing increased attention to them, will increase the extent to which they are addressed by public officials, private funders and other decision-makers. The Foundation will continue to utilize board and staff diversity as an important funding criterion and will look for other opportunities to promote diversity within the broader community.
